Alice L. Parish

, 92, passed away on July 30, 2021 at the D’Arcy Manor Assisted Living Facility in Chandler, Arizona.

Alice was born on January 17, 1929 in Westby, Wisconsin to Henry and Ingeborg Sherpe. She grew up on the Sherpe’s 80-acre dairy farm on the outskirts of Westby. This land was tilled by the Sherpe family from 1865 to 1991. Alice never lost her connection to the land and her Norwegian heritage. She told many stories about her experience attending a one room school during the 1930’s. Alice graduated from Westby High School in 1946, along with her cousin, Marjorie Steenberg. Alice and Marjorie were more like sisters, and had a close relationship all their lives.

Alice was married to Lyle D. Parish on August 13, 1949. They resided in La Crosse, Wisconsin for several years, before purchasing a small farm on “Ten Mile Hill” outside of La Crosse. Alice was a housewife during this time, raising three sons and a daughter on the farm and growing tobacco, corn, and other crops. She later attended Western Wisconsin Technical College, studying to become a licensed practical nurse. She graduated in 1969 and worked for a short time in La Crosse before the family moved to Chandler, Arizona in 1970. Alice began work as an LPN for Desert Samaritan Hospital, serving mostly in the psychiatric unit. She enjoyed helping her patients, and remained with Desert Samaritan until her retirement.

Alice was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chandler for over fifty years. She had a specific pew she always sat in for the early service. Rain or shine, Alice would attend services on Sunday. Being a part of the church community was very important to her. Alice loved to bake for her friends and family. She was known for her chocolate chip cookies, as well as Norwegian favorites such as lefse and sandbakkels. Alice loved her family, her friends, and especially her grandchildren. In 2020, an undergraduate scholarship was named in honor of Alice at the University of California – San Diego. The Earth Healers Award “is given in honor of Alice Parish and other strong women who have cared for the land and loved the earth.”

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lynn, her parents Henry and Ingeborg, siblings Lavern and Helen, her husband, Lyle, and her cousin, Marjorie Haugen. Alice is survived by her sons, Steve, Jeff, and Rod (Susan), as well as grandchildren Maya and David.

Per her wishes, Alice was cremated and her ashes will be interred in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Hillsboro, Wisconsin with her daughter and husband. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
