Donald Joe Elmer

(70) passed away March 17, 2020 in his home in Chandler, Arizona following a courageous battle with cancer.

Joe was born November 22, 1949 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Donna Joan Jessop and Donald LeRoy Elmer.  He grew up in Norwalk California and graduated from Gahr High School.  Joe served a full time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the England/Wales Mission.

Joe attended Brigham Young University.  He married Joan Christofferson in the 1976.  Together they had a daughter, Jennifer Sunshine. He and Joan later divorced.  Joe married Diana Kile in 1993.  Their marriage was later solemnized in the Mesa Temple in 1995.

Joe loved sports, but especially baseball.  He was the pitching coach, the hitting coach and the umpire all from the comfort of his Lazy-Boy.  Unfortunately, the players couldn’t hear him through the TV.  He loved his yard, especially at his house in Gilbert, Arizona.  Whether it was raking rocks or spraying down the sidewalk, it was always tidy.  Joe loved the water.  He was everyone’s float raft in a swimming pool and he could hold his breath for an unrealistic amount of time.

After being diagnosed with colon cancer in April 2012, Joe began his lengthy fight to stay on earth with his family. After 8 years, 3 cancer diagnoses and multiple rounds of chemotherapy he was finally called back home. We find such comfort in knowing that his body is no longer in pain.

Joe is survived by his loving wife and faithful caretaker, Diana Kile Elmer, his daughter Jennifer (Greg) Joiner, Lehi, Utah. stepdaughter Suzanne (Bryce) Coleman, Korea, stepsons, Sean Hudson and James Hudson, Arkansas.  Grandchildren, Oaklee, Hadlee, Karlee, Taylor, Curtis and Mikaela.  Joe also leaves behind his brother, Michael (Cidnie) Elmer, Chandler, Arizona. Sister in law, Pam Elmer, Mapleton, Utah and Nancy McCoy, Sun City, California. Brother in law, Kenny (Michelle) Kile, Shawnee, Kansas, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Joe is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Jackson Dee Elmer.
