DOROTHY GENE JOHNSON

Dorothy Gene (Perry) Johnson, age 93, of Sun Lakes, Arizona passed away peacefully Tuesday, Dec 3, 2019.

Dottie was a 47-yr resident of Sun Lakes, Arizona, a member of the Sun Lakes United Methodist Church, an originating resident of the Renaissance Senior Living Community, and active in various other community projects.

Born September 16, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan, she grew up in Mt. Clemens and New Baltimore, and was the daughter of Roy and Irene Perry.  Living near Lake St. Clair, she enjoyed swimming in the summer and ice skating in winter.  She also loved singing in the First Congregational Church Children’s Choir—led by her mother who was the organist.

Dottie attended Romeo High School, in Romeo, Michigan, where she was nominated class President, but graduated from Mt. Clemens High School in 1944.  She met and married Air Force Lieutenant Carl H. Johnson from near-by Selfridge Air Base a year later.

Raising two daughters, Stacey and Christy, moving to various airbases across the United States including Ramstein, Germany, Dottie hosted rank, squadron and foreign dignitaries, priding herself on her hosting ability and did so with impeccable taste.  After a 30-year career as an USAF Officer’s wife, Dottie and her husband, Col. Carl Johnson retired in Sun Lakes.

With trailblazing in their blood, they were founding members of the Sun Lakes “Recycles” Motorcycling Club, the Sun Lakes Arts and Crafts, the Computer “Booters” Club and numerous other local groups.   She also became the first female volunteer emergency medical technician of the Sun Lakes Fire Department.  As a long-standing member of the Sun Lakes United Methodist Church, Dottie was a major contributor to the Church’s Veterans Memorial Garden.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, brother (Roy Jr), Sister (Jane), husband (Carl) and her daughter (Stacey).  She is survived by her sister (Carolee) and daughter (Christy), and known as “Bama” to her six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.

Services will be held Monday, February 17, 2020 at 11am at the Sun Lakes United Methodist Church.  Donations may be made in her memory to SLUMC with much appreciation by the family.
