Eugene McCray, Jr.
, 83, died peacefully at home in Chandler, Arizona on Wednesday, March 6, 2019. Eugene was born in Indianola, MS and raised in Greenville, Mississippi. He will be fondly remembered by his children, Sandra Boyd, Reginald McCray, Cedric (Angela) McCray and Adriane (Norman) Jones. He is survived by a brother, Carl (Jeri) McCray, a sister, Dorothy Fort, along with grandchildren, nieces & nephews (notably Carol and Ralph), cousins (notably) Faye (Palmer) Linton, and a long-time, special friend, Connie Bowman. Eugene was predeceased by his mother, Rena B. (Green) Harper, father, Eugene McCray, Sr., and a brother, Johnnie McCray.
Eugene graduated high school from Coleman High School, Greenville, MS in 1954, and served in the US Army (1954-1956) prior to graduating from Alcorn State University, Lorman, MS in 1960. He received a post graduate (Masters) degree from Delta State University, Cleveland, MS.
He was a dedicated educator and taught at both Coleman High School and T.L. Weston, Greenville, MS. He eventually retired from his teaching career in 1988 as an Associate Professor of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at Mississippi Valley State University, Itta Bena, MS.
Eugene was a member of New Hope First Baptist Church, Greenville, MS.
A memorial service followed by interment will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, Washington at 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 19, 2019. Remembrances or donations in lieu of flowers can be sent in Eugene’s name to The Parkinson’s Foundation or the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
