Garry Dan Gilbert

Garry Dan Gilbert

passed away on January 11, 2019 in Chandler, Arizona.  He suffered a massive heart attack on December 4, 2019. Two days later he underwent open heart surgery and fought one hell of a fight for the following six weeks in the ICU at Chandler Regional Hospital. Ultimately his body could not sustain and he passed on peacefully with family and loved ones by his side.

Garry was born in 1956 at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, OK. He was the son of Daniel Etna Gilbert and Mildred Juanell Wheeless. Garry is survived by his two children, Ryan Denton Gilbert & his wife Megan Gilbert, Meredith Valentine Rogers & her husband Micah Rogers, his three grandchildren MacKenzie Ilia Weddel, Austin Ryan Gilbert & Avery Reese Gilbert. He learned of his newest grandbaby boy who is due to arrive in June while he was in the hospital spending time with Meredith and Micah.  He is also survived by his sister Mellanie Kaye Hesson & her husband Tony Hesson, brother Choyr Don Gilbert & his wife Dana Gilbert, and sister Erin Lee Norman & her husband Noah Norman. He had four nephews and three nieces; Haley Harris, Zack Hesson, Colby Gilbert, Callie Rose Gilbert, Bryce Jones, Molly Norman and Daniel Norman.

Garry was a kindred spirit, full of life and sarcasm with a heart of gold. He loved football, he avidly followed the Dallas Cowboys, but the games you were sure to never interrupt were the Texas Tech Red Raiders football on Saturday afternoons. He played football for much of his life and was the quarterback for his high school football team. He earned a scholarship to South Plains College in Levelland, TX for track and field, where he met Sarah Valentine (the mother of Ryan and Meredith). He spent much of his younger life caring for large farm animals and had an extreme love for horses. He was a true cowboy at heart, he loved bull-dogging and competing in rodeos. Up until the day he died he enjoyed listening to country music and swinging ladies around on the dance floor. His light truly shined when he spent time with his grandchildren, and he did that every chance he had.

Garry moved from Texas to Arizona in October of 2015, where he worked with his son Ryan.  They spent almost every day together “working”- aka having fun. During this time Garry achieved FAA licensure as a commercial drone pilot, which led Ryan’s company into much success using survey drones. They always had fun doing these projects together.

Garry’s wishes were to be cremated. A celebration of life will be held at the Gilbert residence 4361 S. Squires Lane Gilbert, AZ 85297 on Saturday January 19, 2019. A second celebration will be held in Smyer, Texas in the near future with details to come.

We would like to thank the medical staff at Chandler Regional CVICU who worked tirelessly to care for Garry in his final days. Thank you to all of our friends and family both near and far who have given the family comfort and support during these difficult times.
