LOVE
Story
Jane’s life is a
LOVE
story. Jane was born in Illinois on July 25, 1931, as a middle child of Paul and Philomena Henkel. She had an older sister, Rita Marie and a younger brother, Francis. Jane’s father passed when she was only 8 years old within a short period of time following surgery. The small Henkel family moved off of the farm and into the town of Mendota. Jane’s
LOVE
of education started by graduating high school and continuing on to Junior College in Illinois. It was during this time that Jane caught Mel’s eye and a
LOVE
story began. Mel had served in the war and returned to Mendota to pursue Jane (Henkel), “the
LOVE
of his life!!” Mel and Jane were married on October 21, 1950. Gayle Marie was born in 1951 and Terrence Lee two years later. Mel and Jane’s
LOVE
of entrepreneurship led them to open their own business in Mendota – Mel’s Ideal Market. Their
LOVE
of adventure called them to move their young family west to Scottsdale, Arizona in 1959.
Jane had many creative talents. Her talent and interest in design led her to be an apprentice with a Fifth Avenue fashion house in Scottsdale learning how to create patterns and improvise clothing construction. Jane became quite a seamstress! She completed a Secretarial Degree at Gregg’s College in Phoenix and received several awards for speed and accuracy in typing and shorthand. Jane’s next career opportunity came when she worked at the Country KWBY (Cowboy) station on Scottsdale Rd. Besides being the radio station’s Office Manager, Jane had her own radio show – “The Weather Vane with Jane!” It was during this time Jane was discovered by a local talent agency and took modeling lessons. During her extended lunch time at the radio station, Jane would be hired to model in various fashion shows in the Scottsdale area. After several years in radio, Jane landed an executive secretarial position in Mesa with Great Southwest Fire Company. From there Great Southwest merger with Sentry Insurance Company and Jane’s company moved with Sentry to the new buildings in North Scottsdale. During this time Jane called Scottsdale her home. But when it came to retiring, Jane and Mel’s
LOVE
of golf inspired them to build a new home on the 18
th
tee box in Sun Lakes. Mel and Jane have lived there since 1995, where they have celebrated 67 years of wedding happiness.
