Jo Ann Lerma

Jo Ann Lerma (Tejada), 84, of Chandler, Arizona, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 11, 2026.

Jo Ann was born on October 31, 1941, in Portales, New Mexico, and was raised in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The oldest of seven children, she developed a strong sense of family and responsibility that remained with her throughout her life. She graduated from New Mexico Highlands University and began her career as a music and band teacher, sharing her passion for music with students on the Laguna and Acoma Indian Reservations in New Mexico.

Her time as a music teacher reflected a lifelong love of education and music that stayed with her throughout her life. Jo Ann devoted much of her life to raising her family and was a dedicated mother to her sons, Michael and James, rarely missing a sports practice or game and always supporting and encouraging them.

In addition to her work in education, Jo Ann spent many years working in the electronics industry. She later owned and operated a furniture and décor store featuring Native American and Mexican-inspired items, reflecting her appreciation for the cultures and artistry of the Southwest. She also devoted time to volunteering with her sorority.

Music remained an important part of Jo Ann’s life. She was a lifelong lover of music and a member of the choir at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, where she enjoyed singing and being part of the church community.

She was also known for her love of cooking and for bringing family and friends together. Jo Ann especially enjoyed hosting Christmas Eve gatherings, where her home was filled with food, laughter, and music. She also loved sports and enjoyed following games whenever she could.

She was preceded in death by her siblings Louise Gonzalez, Henry Tejada, and Phillip Tejada.

She is survived by her sons, Michael and James Lerma; her granddaughter, Ryan Lerma; her grandsons, Brenden and Justin Lerma; her brothers, Rick, Michael (Dorothy), and Loren (Vikki) Tejada; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Jo Ann will be remembered for her strength, independence, and deep love for her family. Whether through music, cooking, or the Christmas Eve traditions she cherished, she had a special way of bringing people together. Her warmth and love will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 27, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Whitney & Murphy Bueler Mortuary, 14 W Hulet Dr, Chandler, AZ 85225. Family and friends are invited to attend and celebrate her life.
