It is with both deep sorrow and great love that we announce the passing of Kevin Lee Slater, who was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on September 18, 1969. Kevin was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend whose life was centered around his love for his family, his faith, and his generous heart.
After spending the ages of one to five in Sioux Center, Iowa, Kevin spent most of his formative years in Phoenix. He graduated from Phoenix Christian High School in 1988 and completed a bachelor's degree from the University of Arizona. [1] In 1995, Kevin married Karen Gazzola, and together they built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to their family. They were blessed with two wonderful children, Carson and Carolyn, whom Kevin adored and supported in every way. Providing for his family was Kevin’s joy, and together with Karen, he prioritized their children’s education and growth, enrolling them in Grace Christian Academy and Valley Christian High School. Kevin completed an MBA at Keller Graduate School while working full time and always did his best to ensure that his family’s needs were provided for.
Kevin is survived by his mother, Marjorie Slater, his brother, Keith, and his sister, Karla, along with many loving uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Rodger Slater. Kevin had deep love for his family and was a caretaker alongside his siblings for both his parents.
For the majority of their 30-year marriage, Karen and Kevin made their home in Chandler, Arizona, where they created lasting memories and lifelong friendships. Known affectionately as a “gentle giant,” Kevin embodied humility, generosity, and quiet strength. He was always the first to lend a hand, offering warmth, care, and encouragement to anyone in need.
Kevin loved the outdoors—camping, cooking, adventure, and enjoying Arizona’s beauty with his family. His greatest joy, however, came from being present for his children, faithfully attending their school activities, sporting events, and milestones. His love for his family was integral to who he was.
