Max A. Anderson

Max A. Anderson, age 78, of Chandler, Arizona, passed away on Thursday, November 2, 2023, after battling cardiac amyloidsis. He was born on June 6, 1945, to Maxine Jordan, in California.

 

At age 8, his mother moved him to Smithville, Texas, to live with his maternal grandmother, Omer Carter. He attended elementary school and Mary A. Brown High School where he played football, basketball and ran track. In 1963, this small segregated high school made history by winning the Class A State Football Championship, under Coach Jimmy Emmanuel.

 

On July 27, 2013, in Irving, Texas, he was inducted into the Prairie View Interscholastic Coaches Association Hall of Fame. On September 13, 2019, he was invited back to the high school in Smithville to be honorary coach for their football team, and to be honored and recognized for his accomplishments while in high school, college, and in the NFL.

 

After high school, he attended a junior college in Texas before attending Arizona State University, where he earned his BA degree in Education, and where he played football from 1966 to 1968, under Coach Frank Kush. Then in 1968, he was drafted by the Buffalo Bills, in the fifth round.

 

Max leaves behind his wife of 27 years, Iris Anderson, of Chandler, Arizona, and 4 children, 7 grandchildren, and an aunt, Bonnie Carter (Cole) of Long Beach, California, and an uncle, Bobbie Ray Carter, of Long Beach, California.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents, and maternal and paternal grandparents.

Upon his wishes, cremation was completed on November 7, 2023.
