Wilma Mirich

Wilma Mirich, 93, of Friendship Village Tempe, AZ passed away on May 2, 2023, after a short illness. She was born on January 5, 1930, in Denver, Colorado to Ruth and Julius Stutheit. Wilma graduated from West High School in Denver and obtained her B.A. in Education (P.E.) from Northern Colorado University in Greeley, Colorado.

Wilma and her husband, Guy, met in college and were married on August 2, 1953. Over the next 23 years, Wilma enjoyed the experiences of a “military wife” as she and Guy moved to different U.S. and foreign military bases. On many occasions, she also managed the home single-handedly when Guy was on extended solitary foreign assignments in Greenland and Southeast Asia for the U.S. Air Force. Everywhere she lived over the years, Wilma was actively involved with a host of volunteer commitments including Protestant Women of the Chapel, as a Scouting troop leader and den mom, and supporting her children’s many school and extracurricular activities.

Wilma lived in Phoenix for the past 50 years. During this time, she obtained her School Librarian Certification, and she worked at Independence High School, Sunnyslope High School, and Thunderbird High School as a librarian/media specialist. Wilma was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Glendale, AZ, and Sun Lakes UMC, as well as P.E.O. Sisterhood. In addition to her dedication to leadership in her community and volunteering, Wilma will be remembered for her kind smile, wonderful hugs, and deep and abiding faith. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and will be greatly missed by family and countless friends.

Wilma is preceded in death by her husband, Guy; parents, Ruth, and Julius; sister, Marilyn; brother, Wilbur; son, Mark; and grandson, Scott. Wilma is survived by her daughter, Pam (Mark); son, Gary (Kerry); granddaughters, Jennifer, and Parker; grandson, Jackson; and great grandson, Korbin.

The family will always be grateful for the love and care that Wilma received from the outstanding staff and all her amazing caregivers at Nunnenkamp and the Health Care Center at Friendship Village Tempe. A “Celebration of Life” service will be held on Saturday, July 8th at 1:00 pm. at Friendship Village, 2645 E. Southern Ave. Tempe, AZ 85282.
